Eyes Without a Face takes its title from Georges Franju’s 1960 film and Jason Dill’s recurring use of the phrase throughout his work with Fucking Awesome. I have admired Dill’s work since before I ever picked up a camera, particularly his use of the macabre to captivate viewers before redirecting that attention toward critiques of consumerism, violence, and contemporary culture. Like beauty, unsettling imagery has the power to draw people in; it invites viewers to look closer rather than turn away. Inspired by that approach, this series responds to the class prompt, the performed self. Through masks, mirrors, peeling skin, and obscured faces, the photographs examine identity as something constructed rather than fixed, questioning where the authentic self ends and the persona presented to others begins.
